R-Alpha Lipoic Acid operates as an antioxidant, working synergistically as part of the antioxidant network.* It has been shown to offer antioxidant protection for nerves, eyes, kidneys, the heart, and the pancreas.* It has been clinically tested in humans and used extensively in Germany for over 30 years in support of nerve health.*
We use the advanced form of R-alpha lipoic acid called Na-RALA or sodium-R-lipoate. It is more stable, absorbable, and potent, demonstrating 10 to 30 times higher peak blood levels than regular RALA. While unstabilized alpha lipoic acid has the tendency to polymerize with light and moisture exposure or at slightly elevated temperatures, sodium-R-lipoate does not, which results in significantly improved bioavailability.*
R-Alpha Lipoic Acid is currently being studied for its role in cardiovascular health. Cell studies show it boosts antioxidant function in heart cells, supports the synthesis of nitric oxide by endothelial cells, modulates the NF-kappaB signal in endothelial aortic cells, and modulates vascular adhesion in endothelial aortic cells.*
Researchers at the Linus Pauling Institute of Oregon State University believe that the combination of Acetyl-L-Carnitine, which helps the heart burn fatty acids for fuel, and R-Alpha Lipoic Acid, which is now showing evidence as a heart antioxidant, may be "effective supplemental regimens to maintain myocardial function."*
R-Alpha Lipoic Acid also assists the metabolism of calories in several different ways.* It is a natural component of enzymes involved with cellular energy production (pyruvate dehydrogenase and alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase).* These enzymes are important in the natural metabolism of glucose and fatty acids.*
It also stimulates insulin signaling which supports glucose uptake by muscles as well as the metabolism of triglycerides by muscles.* This makes lipoic acid an excellent exercise companion.*
