High Fat Diet Disturbs Body Clock
November 7, 2007
Researchers conducted a simple mouse experiment that showed eating a diet too high in fat causes a disruption of the 24-hour biological clock. While their experiment is simple, and their results not unexpected, the meaning of the results is profound.
Let me start by saying that saturated fat, as part of a healthy diet, is not a problem to metabolism. These mice were fed excess amounts of fat, enough to provoke weight gain. Alterations in gene signaling related to the hypothalamus and adipose tissue were measured, key sites of leptin function. It is already known that leptin function working properly in the hypothalamus is like the conductor of the orchestra, setting the 24-hour rhythm. This study shows that surplus food itself is capable of knocking this system into a state of disarray. Since the optimal health of all functions in the human body are tied to a proper 24-hour rhythm, the potential adverse side affects of this problem to metabolism and immunity is significant.
Of course, eating in harmony with leptin as explained in the Leptin Diet helps to correct this problem. When you feel in sync, waking up energized and maintaining a good energy during the day, going to sleep easily and sleeping well, then you know your 24 hour clock is working properly. This may be the most important basic factor in the prevention of all diseases. When you eat is just as important as what you eat.
